Turkish economy hits record $651 billion in 2007

Turkey's gross domestic product GDP) in 2007 reached $651 billion, in light of a new calculation system, Deputy Prime Minister Nazim Ekren said in Ankara. Speaking at a meeting organized for the 11th anniversary of the Competition Authority, Ekren said national accounts due to be announced Monday will show that per capita income was about $9,000.

Turkish lottery tender expected for June 2008

A tender for the privatization of Turkey's national lottery is expected for May or may be June, as major international lottery operators as well as national firms are expressing willingness for the lucrative business, sources have said.

International lottery operators such as British Camelot, Greek Opap and Intralot, Italian Lottomatica, Austrian Osterreichische as well as Turkey's Koc, Sabanci, Dogan, Cukurova and Dogus groups are wiling to engage in the auction.

The winner of the tender is expected to start running the national lottery in early 2010, at the latest with an operating right for seven to ten years.

The agreement to transfer the operating rights of the national lottery will include clauses that would guarantee state share from the turnover which are transferred to several state institutions and funds such as the national defense fund.
